Parinita Bora: Department of Assamese, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Behali, Biswanath, India
The tradition of science fiction in Assamese literature can be traced back to 1937, when it first appeared in the literary magazine Abahan. Hariprasad Barua’s Birchatiar Desh is regarded as one of the pioneering works that initiated the tradition of science fiction writing in Assamese. Subsequently, science fiction expanded into other literary forms, including drama and novel etc. Several prominent writers such as Dinesh Chandra Goswami, Bandita Phukan, Abhijit Sharma Baruah and Ranju Hazarika, have contributed significantly to this genre by producing stories and novels that explore diverse aspects of science, technology and human life. Through their creative contributions, they have enriched and broadened the scope of Assamese literature. In the contemporary Assamese literary landscape, science fiction has emerged as an important and established literary genre, reflecting the evolving relationship between scientific thought, technological advancement, and literary imagination.
