Abstract

The situation in today’s world is inseparable from the changing nature of international relations. New geopolitical trends have undermined the traditional understanding of security, as the sources of threat have become multiple and complex. Such challenges are particularly acute in the geopolitical space of western Africa, where Nigeria plays a leading role. Therefore, in the present paper, the focus is on Nigeria’s geopolitical space to highlight some of its prominent security concerns. The current security situation in Nigeria will be analysed through three thematic areas: the implications of regional security arrangements, political crisis management, and the response to new international threats. Particular attention will be paid to the way the Nigerian government addresses such challenges. It will be argued that the country’s current strategy is inefficient and must be adjusted. The new approach should consider the importance of an integrated security system based on the principles of intelligence and diplomacy.
